Turning a face

What one turn does, and what it leaves alone.

Every turn moves one layer of nine pieces, and leaves the rest alone. Look at the cube from the front. This is the right face. Turning it clockwise, as if you were looking at it straight from the right side, lifts the front column up. Like that. And this is counter-clockwise, the other way. Now watch the centers. However you turn, they stay right where they are.

Now you. Turn the right face clockwise, so the front column goes up.

Perfect. That's a clockwise turn of the right face.

Now turn it back the other way, counter-clockwise, so the cube is solved again.

Nice. Every turn can be undone by turning the same face the other way.
